Home tutors for Roma children

This project was launched in 1995, since when Roma children can receive free tutoring at home. One a week as a rule they are visited by student teachers, students of psychology or ethnology or students from the Social Academy. This home tutoring helps the children to pass their school-leaving examinations.
In 1996 the project earned Romano Centro the Integration Award sponsored by the Vienna Integration Fund and the newspaper DER STANDARD for “the best integration project in the field of daily coexistence”.

Roma assistant teachers

Since September 2000 Romano Centro has employed Roma assistant teachers at Viennese schools attended by a large number of Roma children. This project receives support from the Vienna Integration Fund and the Ministry of Education. The assistant teachers act as intermediaries between teachers, pupils and parents. They help to motivate the children, accompany them to class, assist the teachers with language problems and try to open up channels of communication between the parents and the school. Because they speak their language, the assistant teachers help the children in their search for an identity and gain the parents’ trust as being familiar with their cultural and social traditions.
